KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, SEPULTURA and three other names confirmed for the 2021 edition of VOA – HEAVY ROCK FESTIVAL
With the headliners SYSTEM OF A DOWN and BRING ME THE HORIZON confirmed for the 11th edition of VOA - HEAVY ROCK FESTIVAL, which will take place on the 16th and 17th of June 2021, at Estádio Nacional, the festival announces today five big names that reinforce the lineup of the biggest rock festival in the country: the long awaited return to Portugal of the metalcore legends KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and of the Brazilian thrashers SEPULTURA happens on the 16th of June, accompanied by BIZARRA LOCOMOTIVA; on the following day, June 17th, BRING ME THE HORIZON join the Japanese CROSSFAITH and the British SYLOSIS.
Some say that they were the first to put a nail in the nu-metal coffin, but regardless, there is no denying that the North American KILLSWITCH ENGAGE started the next phenomenon in heavy music at the beginning of this new millennium. Today, twenty years later, they saw metalcore be born and almost return to childhood and established themselves as one of the most brilliant proposals of their generation. After the promising debut with a homonymous album, it was with the excellent «Alive or Just Breathing», today seen as the pillar of metalcore, from 2002, that they became a serious case of popularity worldwide. Since that moment, despite having changed the lead singer, they have not stopped growing, keeping their DNA untouched, reinforced by the return of Jesse Leach to the band in 2012, after several successful years with Howard Jones in the mike. «Atonement», the most recent album by the Massachussets collective, was released in August last year.
An unavoidable name of thrash metal, and one of the international bands that had a special connection with the Portuguese from the first moment, the Brazilians SEPULTURA continue to follow a path that, by now, is really theirs. Even after losing the two founding members, the most famous of the Brazilian metal groups did not bow, never lowered its arms and, over an incredible 22 years with Derrick Green as the lead singer, the band have rebuilt and reinvented themselves in the light of this new millennium. Recorded in the sequence of «A-Lex», «Kairos», «The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart» and the much applauded «Machine Messiah», the most recent album of the quartet today led by guitarist Andreas Kisser, entitled «Quadra», was released on February 7, 2020 and proved to be the most ambitious record of the musicians' career.
With a music that sounds as if someone has dragged the dance floor from a rave party to the moshpit, CROSSFAITH from Osaka are becoming noticed at a pace as overwhelming as their music. After having released two albums available only on the home market, the band then decided to present themselves to the rest of the world in 2012 and, from the moment they were nominated for Best International Breakthrough in the Kerrang! Awards of 2014, have been gaining ground, in a process of sustained growth crowned by a prominent place on the main stage of the British Download in June 2014. Six years and three albums later, they are already described «as Slipknot meets the Prodigy», with its peculiar fusion of metalcore injected with EDM, exploding in intense and brutal performances.
Coming from Reading, England, SYLOSIS started to be the talk of the town very early. "Conclusion Of An Age", the debut album, showed an unprecedented fusion of modern death/thrash and progressive elements, with the bold mix that earned them high praise. Not intimidated by the weight of expectation, the band continued their journey with considerable class, supported by a sequence of highly applauded albums, extensive tours and participation in large festivals. "Cycle Of Suffering", the fifth album they have recorded since 2008, was released in early February of this year and has established itself as a declaration of intent, showing once again that they are more than worthy of all the praise that has been sung to them since they took the first steps.
After more than two decades up and running and seven albums, BIZARRA LOCOMOTIVA has proceeded safely with a unique path in the spectrum of national heavy music. Immune to changes in trends and anything other than their own desire to create suffocating music, the band led by Rui Sidónio and Miguel Fonseca remains full of exacerbated energy – as «Mortuário» proves, the most recent album of the lethal device that resists since 1993. Supported by a vast legion of fans and by huge discharges of industrial sound that have garnered applause here and abroad, there is no one to stop this steamroller.
